How to Babywear Comfortably & Safely in Winter

How to Babywear Comfortably & Safely in Winter

Babywearing in winter can feel intimidating, but with a little know-how, you and your baby can stay cozy, safe, and snug—even in chilly weather. Here at Moon Sling, we’re committed to helping you carry your baby comfortably all year round. Before you start with the winter tips below, make sure to follow the TICKS rules for safe babywearing in general. Whether you’re using our 100% linen Moon ring slings or any other baby carrier, follow these winter babywearing tips to ensure your little one stays warm and protected when temperatures drop.

1. Safety First: Visibility Is Key

The first rule in winter babywearing is the same as at any other time of year: always make sure you can see your baby’s face. Avoid covering their nose or mouth to maintain a clear airway. A quick glance down should let you confirm that your little one is breathing easily, with their chin off their chest.

2. Dress for the Weather—Together

A simple rule of thumb is to dress your baby as warmly as you dress yourself. Because you share body heat, you might not need to over-bundle. Stick to layers so you can adjust as needed:

  1. Base Layer: A soft, breathable onesie helps regulate temperature.
  2. Mid Layer: A lightweight sweater or fleece for added warmth.
  3. Outer Layer: This could be your jacket if you’re carrying them under it, or a baby coat if they’re outside your jacket.

Layers make it easier to cool down or warm up depending on changing conditions—perfect for a crisp winter walk or transitioning indoors after being outside.

3. Cover the baby's head, hands and feet

Tiny hands, feet, and ears can get cold quickly. Keep your baby warm with a hat to protect their head and ears, especially if you use a babywearing jacket that leaves your baby’s head uncovered. Use mittens and booties if your little ones hands and feet are not covered by a babywearing jacket. Look for options like the warm and cute booties from Mamalila to keep little toes cozy. If you’re using a babywearing jacket, your baby’s body will be mostly covered, but you’ll still want to pay close attention to their little head.

4. Consider a Babywearing Jacket

Carrying your baby inside your own coat—or using a dedicated babywearing jacket—ensures extra warmth and closeness. If you opt for a babywearing jacket, like the ones from Mamalila, you might want to consider adjusting your baby’s clothing based on how many layers you’ll have between you, make sure your baby’s head stays warm with a hat if the jacket doesn’t fully cover it.

5. Check in Frequently

Because you generate a lot of heat while walking or being active outdoors, it’s important to regularly check your baby’s temperature. Here are some tips on how to do that:

  • Gently touch the back of their neck to see if they’re warm (but not sweating).
  • If they feel too warm, remove a layer or open your jacket slightly to allow airflow.
  • If they’re cold, add another layer or tighten any exposed gaps where cold air might be getting in.
