Threading your Ring Sling properly and why this is important
Whether you’re brand new to babywearing or a seasoned sling mama, threading your Ring Sling properly is one of the most important steps you can take for a safe, comfortable, and frustration-free ring sling experience.
Think of threading like the foundation—if it’s done right, everything else becomes easier. If not, things can start to feel a little… stuck. Literally.
Why Proper Threading Matters
The way you thread your Moon Sling directly affects how well you can tighten and adjust the fabric around your baby. And that tightening? It’s what keeps your baby secure, supported, and close to your heart (right where they belong).
When your sling is threaded correctly:
-
The fabric glides smoothly through the rings
-
You can tighten section by section (top rail, middle, bottom)
-
Your baby is held snug and high without sagging
-
You don’t have to wrestle with layers that bunch or jam
But if it’s not?
The layers of fabric can get twisted or overlapped in the rings, which makes adjusting really difficult—especially when you’re trying to fine-tune the fit with a sleepy newborn or a squirmy toddler. That frustration can sneak in quickly, and we want to prevent that before it starts.
A Smooth Start is A Better Carry
Correct threading sets the stage for a smoother, more intuitive babywearing experience. It’s a small moment of intention that gives you more control over comfort, support, and closeness.
We recommend re-adjusting the fabric in the rings each time you wear it. It only takes a few seconds, and once you’ve practiced it a few times, it becomes second nature.
How to Thread Your Moon Sling (The Right Way)
-
Find the top rail – This is the edge of the fabric with our Moon Sling tag.
-
Feed the fabric through both rings – From underneath, pull the tail up and through both rings.
-
Separate the rings – Pull the tail down through the bottom ring only (just like threading a belt).
-
Spread the fabric – Fan it out evenly across the rings by sliding the fabric through your fingers and pulling the fabric through the lower ring in the same manner. Make sure it’s not twisted or bunched. Each layer should lie flat and visible.
-
Check your rails – You should be able to identify the top, middle, and bottom parts of the fabric for easy tightening later.
Still not sure if it’s right? We have a full step-by-step video tutorial on our website and in our Instagram “how to” highlights.
One Last Thing…
Taking a minute to thread your Moon Sling with care isn’t just about technique—it’s an act of love. It’s the beginning of many cuddles, naps, walks, and calm moments together.
Happy wearing,
The Moon Sling Team
